Unspeakable – Munchkin Cthulhu Review

Kot_Head

The Story So Far…

The world of Munchkin, created by Steve Jackson and John Kovalic is a world of simple rules.

1) Kill monsters
2) Take their stuff.
3) Level Up.

Now  the merry band of minmaxers have to delve into forbidden tomes and abominations from beyond time and space – or go mad trying…

FACT BOX

Name: Munchkin Cthulhu

Players: 3-6

Ages: 8 and up

Playing Time: ~40 minutes

Type: Card Game / Munchkin

Theme: Cthulhu Mythos / Horror / Humour

The Game:

Munchkin Cthulhu is a silly take on the whole Lovecraft Mythos – you start as a level one human with no class (classic munchkin joke) and as you battle ancient evils and steal their stuff, you level up all the way to the finish line!

This Might Sound Crazy

Using awesome tools like the NecroComicon and the Triple-Barreled Shotgun you take up the role of Monster-Whacker, Professor or Investigator.  As you set out to dodge curses and battle unpronounceable evils watch out – you might be drawn to the dark side and wind up an evil Cultist, that’s when the fun starts!

But It Just Might Work

Cultists have a few advantages in the game, exclusive gear, access to cards that normally enhance monsters and a great feeling of evil camaraderie…  If you manage to stay sane longer than the rest, and remain the last non-cultist in a game you win! But – if everyone is a Cultist the game is over and Cthulhu wins…

MCT_Content

Kill monsters. Take Their stuff. Stay sane.

Content:

Munchkin Cthulhu is a card game with fantastic, hilarious artwork by the great John Kovalic (of Dork Tower fame).  The set is in full colour too, which adds to the enjoyment!

The Verdict

A fast-paced backstabbing card game – full of obscure references and puns that will drive you mad with laughter. An excellent game all around, plus bonus points for taking a theme as dark and dreary as the Lovecraft Mythos and making it hilarious!

Hits:

  • Fun, fast and easy to learn!
  • An excellent introduction to the works of Lovecraft
  • Can be used with Cthulhu Dice thanks to a cool Promo Card

Misses:

  • Game is entirely luck based, which can be maddening!

Score

5/5 – Excellent Game!
