Unspeakable’s TOP 5 Retro Video Games
Do you remember a time when videogames were hard as nails? No tutorials, no achievements, just balls-to-the-wall hardcore gameplay.
The likes of TOKI and Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden had me smashing my head against the wall in frustration, or pumping coin after coin into the arcade machine till I got good at it… and I couldn’t get enough.
Luckily, games in the same style are still being released each year : So here’s my TOP 5 Retro Games:
5) Volgarr the Viking (Crazy Viking Studios 2013)
Volgarr is unforgiving. You play as the titular viking and butcher hoards of monsters as you make your way across the lands, spilling buckets of blood on-screen (and some in real life as you smash your head against the wall), to the tune of a truly epic soundtrack in glorious 16-bit graphics.
The great thing about Volgar is just how committed the developers where to re-create a genuine 16-bit era style gem. The game is a non-stop adrenaline rush that will leave you with sore fingers and the satisfaction of a game well played, no matter how many times you get your ass kicked!
4) Shovel Knight (Yacht Club Games, 2014)
Once upon a time, in a far away land, there lived a brave Knight, a Shovel Knight, who along with his companion Shield Knight would travel the lands seeking treasure and adventure. On one fateful night, dark magics separate the two, and without his beloved Shield Knight shovel Knight falls into a life of seclusion.
When the evil Enchantress takes over the Tower of Fate, Shovel Knight takes up his Shovel and takes on the evil Order Of No Quarter to restore balance to the realms.
Shovel Knight is a loving tribute to the likes of Zelda and Mega-Man, an action-platformer with a wide map to explore, colorful enemies to outsmart and unique bosses to destroy with your mighty shovel. Master the Shovel Death Pogo and an array of powerful spells to restore balance to the realm… with a shovel.
